Tests

Tests are structured assessments that evaluate your species knowledge through varied question formats. Unlike flashcard review, which focuses on long-term retention through spaced repetition, tests challenge you to apply your knowledge under pressure with limited tries.

Starting a Test

To take a test, open any deck from the library and select the test button. The button displays your current level for that deck. Tests are available for any deck that you have access to. Alternatively, you can try a custom test by selecting the "Custom Test" button on the deck list page.

The Level System

Each deck has five test levels that increase in difficulty:

Level Difficulty Questions Question Types
1 Easy 12 Identify Species, Fact Check
2 Easy 15 Adds Image Lineup and Geographic Knowledge
3 Medium 18 Adds Attribute Association
4 Medium 20 All question types
5 Hard 25 All question types, harder distractors
  • Level 1 is always unlocked.
  • Levels 2 through 5 unlock sequentially. You must pass Level N to unlock Level N+1.
  • You can retake any level you have previously completed.
  • Passing means completing the test without running out of lives.

Lives System

Each test begins with three lives, represented as hearts in the test interface.

  • Each incorrect answer costs one life.
  • Correct answers do not restore lives.
  • When all three lives are lost, the test ends immediately with a Game Over result.
  • The attempt is recorded as failed, and you can retry the level.

The lives system means that you cannot afford more than two mistakes across the entire test. At higher levels with 20 to 25 questions, this requires strong and consistent knowledge of the deck.

Wrong Answer Handling

When you answer a question incorrectly but still have lives remaining:

  1. The correct answer is displayed, along with an explanation when applicable.
  2. The question is moved to the end of the queue so you will encounter it again later in the same test.
  3. When the question reappears, the answer options are reshuffled into a different order.

You must answer every question correctly to complete the test. Questions you initially got wrong will continue to reappear until you answer them correctly or run out of lives.

Scoring and Completion

  • A test is passed when you answer all questions correctly (including re-queued ones) without losing all three lives.
  • Your score is calculated as the percentage of correct answers out of total answers given.
  • Time spent is recorded and displayed in the results.
  • Passing a test at a given level unlocks the next level for that deck.

Session Rules

  • Tests must be completed in a single session. You cannot pause and resume a test.
  • Extended inactivity during a test may result in the session being ended automatically.
  • Closing the browser tab or navigating away from the test page will end the session.
